What’s The Next Big Thing?
Do you ever wish you could go back in time just a few years?
If I were back in 1994, I’d register wireless.com. I’d also register cellphones.com so I would be the one earning $1300/day just from “type-in traffic” and a system-generated site. Yeah, that guy makes that much just from people typing in “cellphones.com” as a GUESS that it would be a good site to visit. Then they click on the ads that come from an ad-only site generated by a computer.
What would you register?
I would go back to 1998 and build up my main site like crazy and get tons of “old” links.
I would become an about.com guide. I would get into DMOZ on the first day. I would squat on a bunch of Twitter usernames. I would create the iFart app for the iPhone. I would be the guy who started the first bank at Second Life so I too could have millions of dollars in an unregulated virtual bank. I would be the first one on all the IM-related crazes that hit us, however short-lived. But I would also build up massive authority sites.
By now, if you watch closely, you should be able to pick up on some of the up & coming new trends or “big things”. What should you look for?
- how about a lot of people talking passionately about some new site?
- what social sites come up in the top 50 when you search for a high traffic keyword? (go create a profile at those sites now)
- what new tech-related words are being used? Should you register the domain for those new words? ie. BerryCasting? BerryFart?
- what new devices could be coming one day? ie. ZunePhone? SansaPhone?
- what new toy or game or cartoon or card or celebrity deserves a forum website built around them?
I dunno. I have no great revelations, or else I’d be a success. I’m just trying to get you thinking. And if you strike gold, don’t forget my 10%.
