As you know, there’s basically two or three ways to get more followers on Twitter.

One is to be famous or have some form of media at your command. If you’re an MTV vj, this is a great way to announce your twitID and get followers for free. Or you can be a popular blogger.

Another way to get a lot of followers is to follow lots of people and hope they follow you back. Then every few days, you go and purge those who don’t follow you back. (btw, I don’t do that with my @howtofail ID)

To help in this area, you can set up a few autofollow options on twollo.com. In addition, lately I’ve been toying with the following:

237 Twitter Users Who Will Follow You Back and

1001 Twitter Users Who Will Follow You Back

Now, I did find a site that will auto follow all the Twitter users it finds on a certain web page, and you can see how that would come in handy here.

However, I find that these 2 lists are all messed up.  About one third of the users on those pages DON’T actually really follow you back!  (I really only noticed that moreso with the 1001 page)  How can I tell?  It’s simple: if a user really does follow everyone back that follows them, then their ratio should at least match…or they should be following more tweeple than those that follow them.

So, if I were you, I wouldn’t follow all these people.  If you plan on using this list to artificially inflate your follower numbers, then at least take a look at each & every following:follower ratio and only follow those that follow more.

If you’re curious, I have been testing these 2 sites using my OTHER Twitter account; not my @howtofail account…if you care to know.

PS: the 3rd way to build followers is to advertise yourself in various ways on various sites, including tweeting out such valuable content that other people RETWEET YOU or #followfriday you, which results in more followers.
