Alt Tags and SEO
I found a WordPress plugin that talked about the necessity of putting pictures on your site along with alt tags for your main keywords. Yes, we’ve all heard this before, and I never did anything with it. But this site said they’ve found a 10% increase in their rankings due to it.
So, I tried it for main page that I’m always working on. I’m going after a pretty competitive keyword and was forever stuck on page 4 of the SERPS. I stuck in a picture with my keyword in my alt tag and shortly after, I was at #11 (ie. page 2).
Now, I should say I was also doing a bunch of social bookmarking at the time (got a bunch of people in a group to help me out on Delicious…which is another theory I’m working on), so maybe it was that.
But I made a change to that page on a different computer one day, and it was an older version of that page which didn’t have my alt tagged picture on it. I did the upload for some little change and it didn’t have my picture on it. So my pic was gone for a while…and all of a sudden, I’m back on page 4!!
Just a theory for now. I put a pic back up and now I’m waiting for a ranking change this past week…and I’m on page 3 for now…and can’t tell if this theory is good or not.
Any comments?
